As a social enterprise, VAWOCO has an active business with about 14 employees in waste management, advocacy, collecting and sorting used and damaged mobile phones and used clothes. We repair or refurbish discarded phones and resell them at an affordable price. Those beyond repair are taken to our partner’s recycling firm for proper disposal and recycling into other usable products. For the old clothes, we re-design them into usable products like school bags. Our revenue is generated from three streams selling our products (sale of repaired phones & clothes, charges on mobile repair and trainings)
VAWOCO engages youth and women in their business in that, they are trained in collection, sorting, strategies of creating awareness of the hazards waste, encouraging them to dispose it. Others are trained in tailoring skills and old phone repairing and are awarded formal certification, which they use either to gain employment or open their own repair shops. We target low- and middle-income earners and budget conscious phone buyers as the primary market for our refurbished phones and the usable tailor -made products.
Hydroponics Urban Farming is our newest project which is still at a start-up stage. This project is set to transform urban farming and make cities more self-sufficient for food production. A sustainable farming method which will improve food security in urban areas in our country.
